Camana Bay Town Centre Receives Governor’s Award

Camana Bay Town Centre has received the first annual Governor’s Award for Design and Construction Excellence from his Excellency the Governor of the Cayman Islands Duncan Taylor, in conjunction with the Cayman Society of Architects, Surveyors and Engineers and the Cayman Contractors Association. The award recognizes projects that encourage foster and maintain innovation, sustainability and design excellence in the Cayman Islands.

OLIN’s Camana Bay project, led by Partner Dennis McGlade, is a unique 500-acre community consisting of the recently built Town Center with plans for a hotel resort and beach club; retail and commercial office space; a marina village; and a collection of residential neighborhoods. The design sets a new standard for development in the Caribbean, and puts sustainability at the forefront. As part of a multi-faceted design team, OLIN provided urban design and master planning from a landscape architectural perspective, helping to develop the goals and philosophy of the community which respond to its distinctive natural environment.

The island’s extreme climatic conditions, such as fierce hurricanes, strong sunlight, high humidity, frequent seasonal rain showers, and salt-laden soil, water, and air created design challenges for the public spaces. By funneling cooling breezes and producing shade with architecture, fabric, and plants, a comfortable pedestrian environment was created.
