The team of OLIN, Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Urbanus has been shortlisted for the design of a signature park within the West Kowloon Cultural District, a future world-class hub of arts and culture in Hong Kong. Comprising nearly 36 acres of a peninsula on Victoria Harbor, the park development will feature a dense tree canopy, a multifunctional lawn, art pavilions for events and exhibits, retail and dining facilities, and landing steps and seawalls along the waterfront. It will also include an area to be called the “Freespace,” an open-air venue for contemporary music and cross-boundary performances. The park is part of the larger West Kowloon Cultural District, a multi-billion dollar project, originally planned by Foster + Partners, which will transform the currently underutilized peninsula into a 98-acre cultural campus.

Partner Skip Graffam is leading the OLIN team on the submission. “This is a watershed project for Hong Kong and China as a whole, because of its potential to make Hong Kong a world class arts, performance and cultural destination, while simultaneously promoting social sustainability,” he commented. “In a country with so much density and rapid urban development, it is truly impressive to see such a momentous effort to prioritize cultural amenities and park space.”
