For the second year in a row, OLIN was the proud sponsor of the Community Design Collaborative’s Annual Bowling Ball in Philadelphia. In addition to sponsoring the event, OLIN staff members participated in a fun night of bowling in support of a great organization. The Community Design Collaborative provides pro bono predevelopment design services to nonprofit organizations, offers unique volunteer opportunities for design professionals, and raises awareness about the importance of design in community revitalization. Proceeds from the Annual Bowling Ball help the Collaborative in its mission to strengthen neighborhoods through design.
Last year, OLIN Associate Richard Roark (pictured above) was honored by the Community Design Collaborative for his outstanding pro bono work on the master plan for the revitalization of Palumbo Park in South Philadelphia.
…”the space has been organized as a series of pleasurable urban experiences.”

At a Philadelphia press conference today, Claes Oldenberg presented drawings and a model of his “Paintbrush” sculpture for Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Lenfest Plaza, designed by OLIN’s David Rubin. The plaza will serve as a marker for the Academy, as well as the gateway to Philadelphia’s Museum Mile, linking the Academy with other art institutions situated along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, including the new Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

OLIN is pleased to announce that CEO Lucinda Sanders has been named to the American Society of Landscape Architects Council of Fellows. The designation of Fellow is conferred on individuals who demonstrate exceptional accomplishments in design, sustained over a number of years. Lucinda was elected on the merit of her “mastery of art, stewardship and social responsibility of landscape architecture.” For 30 years, Lucinda has created places of social purpose and ecological sensitivity, including the award-winning Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park in New York City; Gap Headquarters in San Francisco; and Comcast Center Plaza in Philadelphia. These dynamic landscapes are reflective of her interest and talents in urbanism integrated with social and natural systems, philosphy, and art. Lucinda will be formally inducted as a Fellow during the ASLA Annual Meeting in September in Washington, DC.
OLIN is pleased to announce the expansion of its landscape architecture and urban design practice with the opening of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Accompanying this news is the appointment of Dennis McGlade, FASLA, as Partner-in-Charge of the new West Coast branch.
OLIN has been closely connected with the City of Los Angeles since the early 1980s, collaborating with many of the region’s leaders in design, culture, government and academia. These partnerships have resulted in some of the firm’s most celebrated projects, including J. Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Patsaouras Transit Plaza. OLIN’s West Coast office further elevates the firm’s commitment to enhancing life in the region through socially-purposeful and sustainable landscape architecture.
Some of the globe’s greatest challenges are all too relevant to the City of Los Angeles: a compromised ecology, aging infrastructure and the pressure to house growing populations. As a leader in orchestrating these and other complexities of the modern landscape, OLIN looks forward to positively influencing the design and development of the city and surrounding areas. “Having successfully worked in Los Angeles and other key cities along the West Coast for decades, our new office will provide OLIN with an even stronger presence in the region and create new opportunities for collaboration and growth,” said Lucinda R. Sanders, CEO.
OLIN’s Los Angeles office comes on the heels of the first-ever landscape architecture studio at Southern California Institute of Architecture during the spring of 2010, led by partners Dennis McGlade, David Rubin and Skip Graffam.

On June 7, a large press conference was held to announce several projects that will significantly improve the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the site of Philadelphia’s premiere cultural institutions. The Parkway, which never fully realized its original vision as a tree-lined, civic boulevard due to lack of development and vehicular congestion, will soon possess a landscape befitting its national cultural importance.
Part of this revitalization is OLIN’s rejuvenated landscape for the Rodin Museum, housing one of the largest collections of Rodin’s work in the world. While honoring the spirit of the original garden, OLIN’s design creates a stunning new entry sequence and an engaging, seasonal garden within. New paving, trees and native plantings provide a vibrant ensemble in which to experience the iconic artwork. The garden will not only serve the Museum but provide a restored urban oasis along the Parkway. Extending from City Hall’s Dilworth Plaza, currently under design by OLIN, to the vast Fairmount Park system, the Parkway’s new vision will create new opportunities for social interaction, increase the amount of trees and plantings, and greatly improve pedestrain and bicycle circulation.
OLIN is proud to announce that Partner Susan Weiler has been inducted into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of fame, the first landscape architect to receive the honor. The Fox Valley native, having grown up in Aurora, Illinois, was recognized for her contributions to the field of landscape architecture, from her dedication to educating generations of new designers to her pioneering work on green roof technology, as seen in her book Green Roof Systems. In becoming a member of the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame, Susan joins an elite cast of individuals who, through association with the Fox Valley by birth, education, residence or service, have achieved great success in the pursuit of their craft.
“Studio Slavonice,” a landscape architecture workshop led by OLIN Partners Laurie Olin and Hallie Boyce at the University of Pennsylvania, explores sustainable development of the Green Belt, an area of the former Iron Curtain containing some of the most significant habitats for biodiversity in Europe. Olin and Boyce, along with 15 of their students, travelled to Slavonice to present the results of the workshop with the local community at the Centre for the Future, an organization that promotes research directed toward a sustainable, just and diverse future.
