At a Philadelphia press conference today, Claes Oldenberg presented drawings and a model of his “Paintbrush” sculpture for Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Lenfest Plaza, designed by OLIN’s David Rubin. The plaza will serve as a marker for the Academy, as well as the gateway to Philadelphia’s Museum Mile, linking the Academy with other art institutions situated along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, including the new Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Healing, education and art will provide inspiration for OLIN’s designs for Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. The hospital is relocating its existing facilities to a new site at the confluence of White River and Fall Creek, adjacent to a historic park designed by the Olmsted Brothers. The relocated medical campus will be in close proximity to downtown Indianapolis with adjacencies to major pedestrian connectors and recreational trails. OLIN will analyze the 37-acre site and propose design guidelines and concept designs for the landscape, including the main entry plaza, gardens and productive roof garden.

OLIN Partner David Rubin recently gave two presentations at the International Federation of Landscape Architects in Rio. The theme of the conference was Green Infrastructure: High Performance Landscapes. David participated in a panel that examined green infrastructure from a global perspective, followed by a presentation on his current project Potomac Park Levee located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. OLIN will ensure that the new levee, which is up to eight feed tall in some locations, will be well integrated into this significant cultural landscape.
Potomac Park Levee is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC at a culturally significant site spanning the Washington Monument grounds and the Constitution Gardens. Currently, this site represents a significant gap in the Anacostia River levee system, which would cause the federal triangle to incur significant damage during 100-year flood events. OLIN will ensure that this new levee, which is up to eight feet tall in some locations, be well integrated into this significant cultural landscape. The design concept draws from the historic canal system of Washington, DC by engaging a lock-keepers house located on the site, and adopting the language of battered stone walls iconic of the canals to form the flood protection levees. OLIN is working closely with the National Parks Service, Army Corp of Engineers, and the National Capital Planning Commission to ensure approval of the final design from these agencies, as well as the public, and is assisting in the environmental assessment report.

OLIN is the recipient of the 2008 National Design Award for Landscape Design from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The award, presented by the Commissioner of NYC’s Department of Parks and Recreation Adrian Benepe at a ceremony held at the Museum, was bestowed to the partners of OLIN for creating timeless places that enhance life and promote social interaction among diverse members of communities. OLIN was also recognized for being an early proponent of sustainability and green design.
