OLIN on Finalist Team for UK Holocaust Memorial Competition

The finalist entries for the UK Holocaust Memorial have been released online and are on exhibit in London. The exhibit is the culmination of an international design competition to design a memorial to the Jewish Holocaust, accompanied by a learning center.  The memorial will be a new gathering place that will serve as a lasting testament to the victims and survivors of one of the darkest hours in world history.  It is intended to remind us of the fragility of humanity's conscience and to heighten awareness that all our actions in some way promote, create, or allow the events of the past and those taking place in our global community today.

The memorial will be located in Victoria Tower Gardens, one of London's Royal Parks, on the bank of the River Thames, adjacent to the Houses of Parliament.  OLIN is the landscape architect on the team led by Allied Works Architecture. The team’s scheme lifts and folds the landscape in the form of a tallit, or prayer shawl, creating a powerful memorial space below it, and leading to the learning center beneath the park.  The biodiversity of the meadow that envelops the memorial symbolizes the human diversity we seek in society.  Together the annual rebirth of the meadow, and the adjacent children's  play area and garden represent the great hope of humanity: our children.

New Collaboration: OLIN + STUDIOS in Camana Bay

As Camana Bay celebrates its 10 year anniversary, OLIN is honored to be collaborating with STUDIOS Architecture on the design of the Block 7 expansion. Our collaborative spirit has resulted in several previous projects with Studios Architecture, including the realized design for Canal Park in Washington, DC. The OLIN team is headed by partners Skip Graffam and Dennis McGlade.

The proposed Block 7 development will anchor the southern extent of Market Street, creating vital connections across the existing Camana Bay Town Center and adding to the vibrant public space previously designed by OLIN. OLIN and Studios are collaborating on the initial master plan to integrate this block into the existing fabric of Camana Bay, while addressing the adjacencies to the new four lane highway that will be characterized by a linear tree park and a wide median,   the Camana Bay Town Center roundabout, and the Maris Avenue bridge. OLIN’s history with Camana Bay, which started in 1996 with the original master plan and includes the recently completed Block 5 North, will ensure this new block seamlessly ties into the connective tissue of Camana Bay.

In addition to this new block design, Dennis McGlade was featured in the Camana Bay Times as part of their 10 year anniversary publication. The article, titled The Evolution of Camana Bay’s Landscape Design, discusses the role of landscapes and planting as a means of defining the development of Camana Bay.

In line with founder Ken Dart’s passion for horticulture, sustainable development and green spaces for community use, Dennis McGlade’s vision and designs have guided Camana Bay since the town's initial inception in 1996. These designs include horticulturally defined courtyards, where plants help establish order, create a hierarchy of space, and ease wayfinding through the development. The use of native species became a driver for Camana Bay and Dennis’ collaboration with Sandy Urquhart helped pioneer the propagation of native Caymanian plant species.

Herba Potentia: Now on View at A/D/O

OLIN is proud to announce the opening of A/D/O and the unveiling of our installation Herba Potentia.

OLIN’s installation is part of the inaugural season of A/D/O’s Design Academy which kicked off in late January of 2017. Programming for the event explored the theme of “Utopia vs. Dystopia: Designing Our Imagined Futures.” Examining major cultural disruptions and scientific advances such as robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and new production technologies, the Design Academy asks whether designers will be the ones to tip the scales toward utopia or dystopia.

Herba Potentia explores aspects of utopian and dystopian landscapes through the lens of three gardens:  The Garden of Control, Emergence and Symbiosis. The installation was realized in collaboration with willow artist Bonnie Gale and custom display manufacturer, Print Structures.
